i noticed bbc had the eletion coverage on but american tv doesnt air any other country's election. i understand america is a powerful country but i really didnt think that other countries would be so involved. call me naive but i really didn't know other cultures cared. We don't read up or pay attention when britain is getting someone new. I think that it depends on which news outlets you are following; National Public Radio and the Leher Hour on PBS always report on the international elections. I remember there being a lot more stuff in mainstream media about last year's French presidential election, Sarkozy vs Royal, but a lot of that was because Royal is a socialist. But the Russian elections to pick Putin's replacement, the German elections bringing in the first woman Chancellor, the controversial elections in South America and in Africa all get covered on NPR. I like Canada, but I am going to be happy the next time that I go overseas NOT to feel like I need to keep my mouth shut in public places so that no one notices that I am American. I will never forget getting stuck in that anti-war protest in Picadilly while looking for Marie at the Trocadero. I hid in the middle of everyone, and I did not say a word for about 45 minutes because I was so frightened. I am also excited about the puppy.

Mellie - thank GOD you kept your mouth shut. Things in large, angry crowds can turn dangerous fast. You were very fortunate!
The only rally I've ever been near and IN (not on purpose) was for immigrants wanting to move to the US without restraint...there were MILLIONS of people flooding Chicago and it was insane. I've walked THROUGH the Right to Life march in DC...that was an eyeopener. It was very graphic (pictures of aborted babies) and disturbing. But I can't say I've ever feared for my life in a huge crowd of America-haters! Indie

So this has nothing to do with the election, but it's still politics so I'm posting it here.
Do you think the Senate and the House should have term limits or do you think the process is good like it is? Just curious to see what you guys think. Kaity

I don't think that our democracy is a true democracy. Its more about who has more money than who can do the job best. Voting isnt counted as ONE vote, its
based on the majority of a state and then the state has a certain number.
The Senate the the House have six and two year terms, respectively. Six is a long time, but even if they has two year terms, i dont think people would pay attention to who is going in anyway. |

Yeah, cause govenors have term limits, as well as our presidents. Just curious to see what people think.

well everyone has a term limit, some are just longer than others.

JesusChristIsLife |

Yes, I'm saying as far as the number of times they can go back. The president can only have two 4 year terms, of course. I was asking if you thought congress and the house should be
like that too.
I think some of been up there so long they don't know what it's like to be a normal person anymore.

I think that it is okay for them not to have term limits. The people who do a good job balance out those who don't.
|
|||
JesusChristIsLife |

Wouldn't that be the same if they did have limits? They'd still balance out.

That would imply though that you consistently got a good person for every bad person. What if the one good person and the one bad person were replaced by one
evil person and one mediocre person? I suppose that it happens, but I would rather have one great person in office, like Ted Kennedy, who has been a wonderful
senator for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, then a series of just okay or good leaders for variety's sake.
