How scary is the economy right now?

like i said.
we're all doomed. seriously. even if we put into office a person that wants to help the economy and environment, nothing will change. how often do the candidates talk about abortion, for instance, and nothing EVER changes about abortion rights or restrictions. nothing. not saying it's a bad thing to not change abortion rights but when it comes to the economy, something NEEDS to change. |

my bank is wamu.
i'm so tired of the way that the world is set up to conform to everything like an institution! for many years i never had a bank account because i liked having COMPLETE say so and control over my money. but there are so many situations in life where it is required for you to have one. so fine we set up accounts. yet they have more ways to screw you out of all of your money than i can count on my fingers! i am so glad we were not the people that bought stock! it's so crappy! (to this day, we do not have credit cards! with the exception of the debit/credit feature on my bank card) i refuse to bury myself. someone on my artdoll board posted this suggestion she got in her email about the bail out: BAIL OUT I'm against the $85,000,000,000.00 bailout of AIG. Instead, I'm in favor of giving $85,000,000,000 to America in a We Deserve It Dividend. To make the math simple, let's assume there are 200,000,000 bonafide U.S. Citizens 18+. Our population is about 301,000,000 counting every man, woman and child. So 200,000,000 might be a fair stab at adults 18 and up.. So divide 200 million adults 18+ into $85 billon that equals $425,000.00. My plan is to give $425,000 to every person 18+ as a We Deserve It Dividend. Of course, it would NOT be tax free. So let's assume a tax rate of 30%. Every individual 18+ has to pay $127,500.00 in taxes. That sends $25,500,000,000 right back to Uncle Sam. But it means that every adult 18+ has $297,500.00 in their pocket. A husband and wife has $595,000.00. What would you do with $297,500.00 to $595,000.00 in your family? Pay off your mortgage - housing crisis solved. Repay college loans - what a great boost to new grads Put away money for college - it'll be there Save in a bank - create money to loan to entrepreneurs. Buy a new car - create jobs Invest in the market - capital drives growth Pay for your parent's medical insurance - health care improves Enable Deadbeat Dads to come clean - or else Remember this is for every adult U S Citizen 18+ including the folks who lost their jobs at Lehman Brothers and every other company that is cutting back. And of course, for those serving in our Armed Forces. If we're going to re-distribute wealth let's really do it...instead of trickling out a puny $1000.00 ( "vote buy" ) economic incentive that is being proposed by one of our candidates for President. If we're going to do an $85 billion bailout, let's bail out every adult U S Citizen 18+! As for AIG - liquidate it. Sell off its parts. Let American General go back to being American General. Sell off the real estate. Let the private sector bargain hunters cut it up and clean it up. Here's my rationale. We deserve it and AIG doesn't. Sure it's a crazy idea that can "never work." But can you imagine the Coast-To-Coast Block Party! How do you spell Economic Boom? I trust my fellow adult Americans to know how to use the $85 Billion We Deserve It Dividend more than I do the geniuses at AIG or in Washington DC. And remember, The Birk plan only really costs $59.5 Billion because $25.5 Billion is returned instantly in taxes to Uncle Sam. Ahhh...I feel so much better getting that off my chest. *sigh* one can only dream

I would like the bail-out legislation to include something to create jobs here. And I think that tax incentives should be given to companies who keep an
American labor force instead of shipping off their labor to India and China.

That's not a bad idea, Mellie.

people in china and india need to eat too. their government doesnt care if they starve. they honestly dont care about their people so when their people find a
job that feeds their family, im not all that sad that it's from america. the homeless here are homeless because of a number of reasons. the number one
reason? Drugs. they did this to themselves. the second reason people are homeless? veterans. Our country was willing to send them out to risk their lives, but
not willing to take care of them when they came back to society. at least we are helping another country.
im sure im missing the facts, but i guess im just compassionate to less fortunate countries. |

hmmmm......i agree with some of bliss' points there. but the unfortunate thing is that when companies begin outsourcing jobs at a cheaper pay rate to other
companies, guess what happens to americans? we lose jobs, we lose money, keeping up with inflation becomes almost impossible! the cost of living is CONSTANTLY
going up, and pay rates aren't as consistent. the 4 bucks they want to pay someone overseas might pay somebody's bills there, but not here........

im just not sure if any american would subject themselves to the work, time, and cheap pay that others get for their efforts overseas. If we could get away
with it here, we would, but we can't because no one would do it even if they did pay minimum wage.
im a big hippy. i think we shouldnt use currancy and we should go back to trading and bartering with goods and services. |

i agree that there is some labor that americans will not do for low wages (ie- produce harvesters.......i live in san diego and can drive by fields where there
are a bunch of mexican pickers (many illegal), and i know there aren't many other people willing to do that job and get paid what they do.
but when you have a company like say- time warner- who provides cable and internet service here in san diego and where ever else- they have outsourced their customer service calls to india. i know plenty of people that would take that job! i did customer service jobs as a young woman just out of high school, and had many friends that did it well into college. but because this company can get away with paying the indian workers almost nothing.........who do you think they will give that job to? and where does that leave the people here that could've used even that minimum wage? but bliss- your opinion about currency echoes my opinion voiced about banks a few posts up ^

ooo little off topic, but the ads on the side of our posts are turning political! i dont want my post to be associated with a certain candidate!!! ACK!!
its true. companies mostly send jobs overseas to save money. its cheaper. in a weird way, we are helping others so im not picketing or anything but, i do think we should take care of our own country before worrying about how others are getting their minimum wage. Life isnt easy here for people who make minimum wage. We can't live on it anymore. well , we COULD but we are capitalistic and think we NEED more things than we really do. |

Sadly, these people get the jobs because they are willing to take a lower wage than Americans are entitled to by the minimum wage legislation. The motivation isn't to give people jobs; it is to spend less money on labor. If the motivation were more altruistic, I would be inclined to agree with you, Bliss. Just got back from England. The economy doom and gloom is unavoidable. I am lucky in that I saved spending money before my trip so that I can pay off my credit card at the close of the period.

ugh i know you are right, mellie. they dont hire these people because they care, but no matter WHY they hired them, it is helping them. I have been trying to
find a place to pay me for donating my blood. no matter why i donate, someone is being helped by getting my blood. does that make sense?
nowhere around here will pay me tho. sad. i need to pay for gas! |

i got this email today and thought i would share it:
hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!!!! makes ya think without debates with inflated answers or totally untruths... Subject: What if things were switched around? Something to think about... What if things were switched around? Think about it. Would the country's collective point of view be different? Could racism be the culprit???? What if the Obamas had paraded five children across the stage, following the debate, including a three month-old infant and an unwed, pregnant teenage daughter? What if John McCain was a former president of the Harvard Law Review? What if Barack Obama finished fifth from the bottom of his college graduating class? What if McCain had only married once, and Obama was a divorcee? What if Obama had met his second wife in a bar and had a long affair while he was still married? What if Michelle Obama was the wife who not only became addicted to pain killers but also acquired them illegally through her charitable organization? What if Cindy McCain graduated from Harvard? What if Obama had been a member of the Keating Five? (The Keating Five were five United States Senators accused of corruption in 1989, igniting a major political scandal as part of the larger Savings and Loan crisis of the late 1980s and early 1990s.) What if Obama couldn't read from a teleprompter? What if Obama was the one who had military experience that included discipline problems and a record of crashing seven planes? What if Obama was the one who was known to publicly display a serious anger management problem? What if Michelle Obama's family had made their money from beer distribution? You could easily add to this list. If these questions reflected a reality, if the tables were turned, do you really believe the election numbers would be as close as they are? This is what racism does. It covers up, rationalizes and minimizes qualities in one candidate and emphasizes negative characteristics in another when there is a color difference. And consider the candidates' educational backgrounds: Barack Obama: Columbia University - B.A. Political Science with a Specialization in International Relations. Harvard - Juris Doctor (J.D.) Magna Cum Laude Joseph Biden: University of Delaware - B.A. in History and B.A. in Political Science. Syracuse University College of Law - Juris Doctor (J.D.) John McCain: United States Naval Academy - Class rank: 894 of 899 Sarah Palin: Hawaii Pacific University - 1 semester North Idaho College - 2 semesters - general study University of Idaho - 2 semesters - journalism Matanuska-Susitna College - 1 semester University of Idaho - 3 semesters - B.A. in Journalism (Sports Broadcasting) Education isn't everything, but this is about the two highest offices in the land as well as our standing throughout the world. You make the call.
