Okay, I'm assuming that this thread isn't going to turn out like some of our other controversial threads throughout the board history (ex: The
Passion of the Christ)...I figure since we are the Orlando 6 (Mellie, Kaity, Kat, Bliss, Lindsey and myself...with occassional appearance of Fran (Frank) and
Kim (Desmond)) and we know eachother quite well - that this should be an exciting thread.
So, let's begin! OBAMA V. MCCAIN DISCUSS! Indie PS - just for future clarification Mellie - Sayid Kaity - Kate Kat - Jack Bliss - Sun Lindsey - Baby Aaron Me - Hurley (or Ben)

indie - wut the heck does all of your clarification mean? I have no idea what your talking about. Why am I the sun? am I hot? Or can I only talk on sundays? Is
this a movie i am unaware of? I dont know what is going on!! lol
Ok. I'll be the first to start. Obama. heres why. 1. he is NOT bush. 2. he has no interest in keeping out troops over in iraq. 3. he wants a more universal health plan 4. he is NOT repubican 5. he is a wonderful speaker, which is a huge upgrade from the one we currently have. So, I don't know all the issues or everything he says he plans to do but number 2 and 3 are the big ones i care about. Honestly tho, when is the last time a president was elected and he changed anything? did ANY president ever change our health care system? even when the issues were strong about abortion, did ANY president outlaw it like some said they would? no. its all lies and broken promises to get elected. Even if the future president on either side said they would end the war or change our system in some way, i doubt that would ever change. I really don't think either of them are going to change anything, but i would rather be proud of a president we have for a change than be humiliated by men who aren't even listening to what the country wants. I thought we were a democracy? we clearly arent being listened to on any level. people in power are the only ones making decisions about anything. its unfair and a bit like capitalism. i think. isnt it like capitalism? maybe. anyway, you see my point. hopefully. But, I don't really vote. I'll be honest. If I vote, I'm writing a bogus name because I don't believe in our government. My best friend actually joined an anarchist group and its a very interesting group of people to say the least. what does everyone else think about the political race? |

lol - unfortunately it was my lame attempt to connect us back to LOST and the Oceanic 6....I shouldn't have even brought it up.
Oh, and I concur with your OBAMA reasons. My only concern (which isn't going to keep me from voting for him) is that he doesn't have a lot of experience. Sure, he is a Senator, but not for that long. I'm hoping that his inexperience will help him be "fresh" instead of lacking. I had no real personal problem with McCain - other than I wasn't going to vote for him because of his foreign and domestic policies - but I've heard a few slanderous/racist remarks come out of his mouth about trade in the middle east....I was NOT impressed. But there is no doubt the man is a war hero - I don't want to seem like I'm taking away from his achievements - he's just not the one for me. Do you think he has a chance in today's America against a white man? I don't really want to turn this into a race issue - but really, do you believe America will vote for an african american? Indie PS -- yeah, bliss, sun IS hot. And kickass. And GORGEOUS.

Meh, I don't like either of them. I can't stand listening to either of them talk about what they will do cause honestly, I don't believe either of
them.

I think a lot of people feel the way you do, Kaity.
America is waaay too polarized for most people. It's strange that we have such limited options in the US whereas in almost every other major democratic nation they have at least three or more options to chose from! Indie

Are you? I personally was very sad to see Hillary go - she was waaayy more liberal than her husband, but she is SO EXPERIENCED I wonder what she could have accomplished. Indie

i knew you would say that. huckabee was the strongest christian so i figured you would like him
and indie - I've never seen Lost. not one episode. thats why i didnt understand your metephor lol. ya know wut i noticed today? anarchy is the new america. tell me if this sounds familiar: a group of people who wanted away from the oppressive governments in hope for religious and ecomonic freedom. they took matters into their own hands, murdered who they had to, and created their own society. true democracy. where the people of the society voted and that is how they decided on their rules and regulations and movements. does this sound familiar? maybe.. like.. how AMERICA was formed? coming from england, killing the indians (or is native americans more PC?) and setting up land here. now, the anarchists are uprising. theres a huge group going to the republican national convention in protest this summer. anarchy is on the rise. they are wanting to overthrow an oppressive government so we can get back to the basics that the "americans" thought was wrong from the Native americans. history repeats itself. anyway, back to politics. i think america is ready for a black president. i think the race card isnt a factor for most since he is popular with the younger vote and most younger kids couldnt care less what color of the rainbow he is. plus, since he was raised by a white grandmother, he has an understanding of racial tension on both sides. i dont think america was ready for a woman. men will never let that happen. sorry, bit of a feminist. |

damn al gore for not running! and down with the electoral college!
indie's LOST theme had me cracking up, i'll trade bliss' sun for my baby aaron any day i actually agree a lot with what indie said about obama, and will vote for him. i feel like america is in such a rut right now, and we really need to get this country going in a better direction. we have so much to work with here, there is no excuse for so much of what is happening in and outside of our country, and mccain really just looks like more of the same to me. i hope america will take this chance to stand together and choose a better direction.

I know - America needs to snap out of whatever funk it's in. Left and right we're just tearing up a lot of things: the Geneva convention, inflation,
poor education standards, international policy....yeah, I'm really hoping that Obama can make an inspiring and meaningful change.

I am all about Senator Obama. I was behind John Edwards initially, but since Edwards pulled out early in the primaries, I have been a staunch Obama supporter.
I simply cannot believe the crap that this guy is being faced with: being accused of being an Islamic terrorist. What with the blatant stereotyping and racism of the news media against him, I don't really blame the people who are not very positive about the white community. The facts are that he is a smart, articulate, charismatic man who has some new ideas and some integrity. How he is going to survive in Washington with those two things, I don't know, but I am more than excited about giving him the opportunity to try. I received a poll in the mail from the Democratic National Committee, which I took the time to fill out. It asked me to rank what I thought were the most important issues in the country today. The ones I put on the top were: jobs and the economy, education, health care (for the elderly,) and the Iraq war. The fiscal irresponsibility of the current administration is embarrassing. If a Fortune 500 company president ran his company that way, the shareholders would have fired him, and there would be a criminal investigation. If you are in government, however, people seem not to notice so much. I am much less bothered with the moral social issues that seem to stir people up. I find them peripheral and distracting from the big picture. 1.) People have concerns about the breakdown of "the family"? Improve the economy so that it doesn't take two people working full time to make enough to put food on the table and clothes on their kids backs and still be able to afford a solid education. (Parents get cranky when they don't have money and tend to take it out on each other. They also miss out on things going on with their kids. Just an observation.) 2.) People are opposed to abortion? Educate people about practicing contraception and have access to health care professionals to help them out with that. 3.) Illegal immigration? People tend to go after foreigners when they are unhappy and looking for someone to blame. (Hello, Nazi Germany.) Americans need to change their attitudes about what jobs are beneath them, and remember that the United States is a country built on the backs of immigrant labor. Fresh blood and perspectives can be a good thing. 4.) Religion in schools? Is this really about religion or about making people better? Get them educated and give them a living wage with reasonable access to doctors and medicine when they need it, and I guarantee you will find happier, better people. 5.) Gun control? Well, yes, guns don't kill people; people kill people, but guns certainly help. And if we were living in a country where people are happier from being better educated, less afraid, and with a stronger economy, maybe there would be less gun related crime. I don't know about any of this; I am just hypothesizing. But doesn't it seem reasonable?? Anyhow, I am supporting Senator Obama in this election. I think that he would do a good job. Certainly a better one than the current president. BTW, in case you missed it, a motion to impeach the President and the Vice President was introduced in the House of Representatives last week and was sent to committee. It is expected to die there, but the fact that it was introduced gives me hope.

6 yrs ago I would have said "impeah! what! Nooo!"
But now, there is no other way for them to be accountable. Everything that Clinton left us with (decent ecconomy, debt being reduced, profitable/fair foreign policy) has been smashed and ruined. I'm also expecting it to die, but it's still very hopeful that there could be a chance for this administration to be held for the things they have done. Indie PS - I loved your numbered reasons, Mellie.

I am voting for Obama for, well, pretty much the same reasons that Mellie posted.
I am really sick of hearing people say that we need to pull out Iraq. Do they even understand what would happen if we did that? I'm not saying that I agree with the choices that Bush made. I do, however, think that something needed to be done. Should it have happened the way that it did? No, probably not but if we pull out now nothing is going to change. It's going to go back to the way it was or even worse. I am looking for a President that can understand things were botched in the middle east, and while pulling out now isn't the answer, something needs to be changed. Education is a very big thing for me, as well as gun control. I'm not sure that I can add to what Mellie said. Very nice.
