oh, so you're just talking about the movie, then? its just cause the elves are singing this beautiful song for gandalf, and theyre all mourning, and, actually, he snores. u might not have heard it, its kinda hard to hear, but he snores right in teh middle of it so he hits him.

Hey merricherry, I hope I can answer these for you!
Within the rings were bound the power to govern the races - the Dwarves 7 rings allowed them to govern the race of Dwarves, the 3 Elven rings gave them the power to govern the race of Elves. I dont know about the Dwarven rings, but the Elven rings also have other powers - like Galadriel's ring Nenya has magical power to do with water, which is how she uses her mirror. Sauron's ring is a master ring - it can take control of all the races, regardless of the other rings. Which is why it's so important that it be destroyed Morgoth is the original evil lord - Sauron was his servant before he rose up and started to become very powerful. I havent read all the way through the Silmarillion (the book which tells about Morgoth) yet, so I dont know the entire story about Morgoth, or indeed if there's more about Sauron in that book. I hope that helps! Love, Syndarys ![]() Crystal Mind & Magenta Feelings|Glaswegian Hobbits:A Billy Boyd Fansite Billy, mein kleiner liebesdachs! One by one, the penguins are stealing my sanity... |

Re: LotR/Tolkien Frequently Asked Questions *spoilers* | ||

Sauron appears in The Silmarillion. He actually has a bigger more talkative role in there than in LotR, believe it or not.
He's also something of a jerk. No surprise there. He tricks this one may into betraying a friend by conjuring up a phantom image of his dead wife. It's very similar to the part with Dr. Yueh and Baron Harkonnen in Dune, if you've ever read that. Sauron also gets his @$$ kicked by a woman and a dog! Granted it was Luthien and Huan, but still... ![]() |

Let me get this straight, once and for all...
I have heard that Gil-Galad was in the Battle of the Last Alliance. But in the movie, I can't find him! Was he there or not? hm... ![]() |

yeah, he was in there, but only very briefly, for just a second or two. he's sticking a spear in someone on the ground, and he doesnt have a helmet like most of the other elves.

Welcome!
I know of one, semi-famous quote that is tossed around a lot discussing the Professor's intentions: "I cordially dislike allegory in all its manifestations, and always have done since I grew old and wary enough to detect its presence." Another (funny?) one: "I am told that I talk in shorthand and then smudge it." Hope that was helpful, .:one must have chaos within to give birth to a dancing star:. hey guys, Wat's doin?
I was watching FOTR and TTT last night and i need to ask these questions. Ive read the books so, i might mention something from them that i forgot was in them. Ok here goes. 1. How long do dwarves live? 2. What is the mearas (Shadowfax??) 3. What kind of horse is Arwen's in da movie (random question, not really important) 4. Does Bill the pony come to them after something to do with some mental guy with Apples in the book?? i dont remeber, i think it was in the barrowdowns but really dont remeber. 5. How many kids did Arwen and Aragorn have, what were their names (i know Eldarion) and would they be allowed to go to VAlinor? 6. was Celebrian an elf? how come Arwen and Elrond are Peredhil (half elven) 7. Its so gross when Ugluk licks his own blood. ewwww. 8. I read something about BEren being some race of elves, um, does that mean men are descended from elves? That would mean aragorn is one, so he can go to VAlinor. Rite? sorry if my brain is working... in... hyperdrive. Thats alot of questions but, i dont exactly watch movies sometimes, i like drift off. I think thats why i had to see FOTR 5 times to get the whole movie *men in white coats take EQM to nearest mental hospital* Thanks for your help guys. EQM |

Arieniel:
Quote:Well, I suppose the best ource for Tolkien quotes on any subject would be the book The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien which you should be able to find at any local bookstore or Amazon. If you don't really want to spend money on that, you can always do a google search on the subject or check out TolkienOnline which has a quote section. Elven Queen Of Mirkwood: How long do dwarves live? A couple hundred years, I believe. They live longer than Men, but are not immortal like Elves and therefore grow old and die. The Appendix of RotK has some information on the subject of Dwarves. What is the mearas (Shadowfax??) I can't be arsed to look it up right now, but, from memory, mearas is Old English/Rohirric for 'king of horses', which is essentially what Shadowfax is. What kind of horse is Arwen's in da movie? Er, a white one...? Does Bill the pony come to them after something to do with some mental guy with Apples in the book?? i dont remeber, i think it was in the barrowdowns but really dont remeber. Uh, well the Hobbits got Bill the Pony from Bill Ferny, that creepy guy in Bree. The mental guy you're refering to is probably Tom Bombadil and since I haven't read FotR in a while now, I'm not sure if he had anything to do with Bill. How many kids did Arwen and Aragorn have, what were their names (i know Eldarion) and would they be allowed to go to VAlinor? Their only child ever named is Eldarion, but it is mentioned in the RotK Appendices that they had some daughters. How many I don't know. Since Arwen chose to be mortal it stands to reason that their children would be mortal as well, just like Elros' children were (Elros is Elrond's brother and an ancestor of Aragorn's). was Celebrian an elf? how come Arwen and Elrond are Peredhil (half elven) Celebrian was the daughter of Celeborn and Galadriel, so yes, she was an Elf. Elrond and his children (Arwen, Elladan and Elrohir) were known as Half-Elven since they were descended from the union of Elf and Man (on Elrond's mother's side it was of Beren and Luthien -- one Elrond's father's side it was of Idril and Tuor). I read something about BEren being some race of elves, um, does that mean men are descended from elves? No. Beren was a mortal man. He just fell in love with and married an Elf, Luthien. That would mean aragorn is one, so he can go to VAlinor. Rite? Nope. Aragorn is descended from Beren and Luthien, but is his decended through the line of Elros, who chose to become human and therefore all his dscendants are human (although longlived human). |

Of Gandalf:
1. Gandalf is Maia, in the shape of an old man. I understand it as Gandalf is a name for this man only. Does Gandalf, as a Maia, have an original name? 2. When he had fought the balrog, he became Gandalf the White. Why? And who "transformed" him? ![]() |

His Maia name is Olorin. Actually Gandalf isn't his name as a man. Gandalf is the name given to him by Men just like how Mithrandir is the name given to him by Elves. He has a few other names too, but I can't be arsed to look them up right now. 2. When he had fought the balrog, he became Gandalf the White. Why? And who "transformed" him? Oh crap. I don't know how to answer this. I looked it up a bit in Letters to JRR Tolkien, but I'm still fuzzy on the details... I can't answer the 'Why?', but I can say that he was 'transformed' by the Valar, probably Manwe at the bidding of Eru. When he talks about the 'they' who sent him back, he's talking about the Valar. |

Nazgul: a comment and a question
Aragorn said: "They are (...) Ringwraiths. They were once men (...)". This is not correct. I have found out that one of the Nine was female! If you pay attention to the scene where a Nazgul beheads a Hobbit and ask an other Hobbit: "Shire...Baggins", you can hear it has a feminine voice. Since they at first were Kings, would this make the woman a queen? The film version of LOTR is known for its details and complexity. Why didn't Peter Jackson find out about the female member, and use this in the Prologue, (the scene with the 9 Kings showing their Rings)? Did each of the races of Middle Earth have their own religion? ![]() |
|||

Re: thanks morri | ||
|
As far as Tolkien goes, they were all male. Jackson may have used a female voice in the films, but they are definitely all male. It would be so unusual for one to be female that Tolkien would've mentioned it. As I recall, the Ringwraiths are Numenorean lords some from the Numenorean settlements in the South (near Mordor), which Sauron corrupted. The Witch-King is from Angmar, though. That's in the North (near Rivendell).
Did each of the races of Middle Earth have their own religion? Not really. The races don't worship anything, per se. Unless you count the Numenoreans to 'worshiped' Sauron and Morgoth. The races of Middle-Earth (mostly the Elves and Men) hold the Valar in high esteem and often entreat their aid, and hold a feast in honor of Eru (God), but there really aren't any trapping of religion involved. The honor and respect the Valar and Eru, but they don't pray to them or have any rituals for them. It's hard to explain. |

Does anyone have a clue how many persons that are/have been involved in the LOTR triology in total? Cast, extras, crew, set designers, costume makers, catering, etc.? Maybe impossible to answer, but it would be fun to know!
