Re: Sindarin Elvish Help | ||

I'd like to see my name written in Elvish characters so I can chart it for a cross stitch project. My name is Paula, which means "little" or "small". According to one of the webpages I stumbled across, my Sindarin name is "Pitye". So how would I put my name into Elvish characters? I have downloaded a Quenyan font--but would I type in "Paula" or "Pitye"? Or should I type in "small"?

Orli Lover, I dont know if I can help with Elvish Characters as I dont know how to do them, but I think if you have a Font to do the writing then I feel it wont matter what you put... so it would be up to you as to whether you wrote "Paula" , "Pitye" , "small" or "little" .
Kim you can say both "one from the Royal Fortress" and "warlord" two ways ... Firstly... one from the Royal Fortress ... a) o' tuulo' i' armeost b) o' tuulo' e arost you can break that down to just... tuulo' armeost .. or .. tuulo' arost .. which is From Royal Fortress Secondly... warlord ... a) ohtaheru b) ohtaran I hope that has helped. ![]() Every moment I don't see you, is like an eternity without sun, a lifetime without breath, and every time I do see you, the light is there, but my breath still takes it's leave. That was a really sweet poem. I liked it alot. YOu don't often find a poem that has feeling in it.
I'm afraid I didn't go to well translating it though. I only got 3 of the lines and even then they were a bit sketchy when I compared them to your translation. But I am getting there. Love yas all Laura |

I was just curious Sir will, would the translation be much different if it was. " I will love you until the day i die?" if so what would it be.
Also thank you very much for translate that for me, you're a star! *hugs* And that poem, |

Dark, royal blue with sparkles of white
is coming to an end. Day break is near-- as if greeting an old friend. Out of the bleak night, springs a brighter hue. Bringing with it, a day that is new. The cool air smells sweeter now, and the first bird begins to call-- Wishing with it, a greater peace unto all. That's what mine means. I had to skip the word 'hue' because there was no word for color or hue in Quenya or Sindarin. But I like writing about nature in my poems. It's so easy for me, because I think that's what people should focus on. Like-- not just love and stuff. You know? BTW- I am in love with the sunrises where I live ![]() ![]() |

Well. | ||

Sir Will - Well I tried to translate it without using any sources. So I recognised the words tear, heart and the normal conjunctions such as you and me etc. But I thought the first line was finished instead of fallen. I did not recognise broken at all. I was thinking along the lines of torn. Yet again way off. The third line was pretty much how it was translated. SO fairly sketchy but not altogether a hopeless attempt.
Dani - I like your poetry about nature. I can nearly picture the sunrise. I like to try and picture things. It is a beautiful peice. Next time I will try and translate yours as well. Seeing as I am a little more familiar with Quenya then Sindarin. I keep getting mixed up between the two. I am trying to translate some of my poems into elvish but it may take a while to do so. Seeing as a number of mine are fairly long. Hmm.. I will have to keep on trying! Umm question Hannon lle is that Quenyan?? Laura |

This might be a weird question, but is there a translation for "Rowan"? As in the tree? It's my horse's name, and I was just wondering, as I still have to come up with a show name for her. I'm thinking of breaking the tradition of naming them all after things to do with Star Trek.

*drops in from the Lindahote board across the way*
How are you learning Sindar, people? Ardalambion has great reference material, but the only lessons I see are Quenya, which won't do. Legolas wouldn't speak it. The grammar, while patchy, is not troublesome, but lenition and other types of shifts are making my head hurt. I want to crawl back into something nice and easy, but I have a story to write, and it must be writ well. That means proper elvish. I desire: 1. A pun. My hand is mortal, but my heart is an elf's. The last English phrase is ambiguous. It might mean: my heart is (essentially like) an elf's. (elf in spirit) or my heart belongs to an elf. (in love with some elf) I need to retain the pun. But what "of" do I use? In Gates of Moria and other such phrases, no "of" is needed. But I've seen en used now and then. hunen edhel. (no prep) hunen en-edhel prep, and I bet I'm mangling the lenition again. Is there any way to pull off the pun? And I need the specific "elf" term for Legolas, rather than generic "edhel", to startle the boy, since he isn't sure whether the human is boasting or flirting. His father is grey-elf, so I suppose Sindar would do, but he is standing with several Galadrim at this moment, and most of them are Sindar, so it's too vaugue. More simply: 2. Beloved as a form of address. (Lenitions scare me) 3. My prince. 4. Elf-friend or steadfast or something that sounds good and crisp after Haleth. hannon le a mae govannen. I'm going to go watch TT again tonight in stadium seating, IMAX format. Why did I not search for that during the FoTR run? |
