I thought that since the "movie" thread was becoming a "/book" one, I'd create a thread for book talk and stop messing up the movie one.......

when i was at the book store buying my copy of "the golden compass", i saw this book,

and for some reason was a little offended on how some people capitalize off of others....maybe if i was a fan of mugglenet i'd like the idea more. what do you think??

Actually, it comes more from the MuggleCast then MuggleNet. All of the proceeds go to charity

Personally I wouldn't buy the book cos I would like to just read the actual novel and enjoy it for what it is... but if other people want to know what it is that is there perogative. Lol. The Charity thing doesn't hurt in promotion I suppose.

Well, the thing about that MuggleNet book is that they have absolutely no idea what happens either. They are just taking guesses, as you & I would right here on the board. They just happened to publish theres. There is a Snape one out there too, but I'm not sure who put that out.

I am still on the first book. I am trying to read three things at once and am failiny miserably!! I will have to put them down soon anyway, to reread Potter before book 7!!

i'm only on the first Pullman book as well, and still towards the beginning of the book. unfortunately, i don't have much time to read lately, so shamefully i keep it in my bathroom...it's the only place i have a real excuse to lock my kids out and get ten minutes of privacy.
as far as the book goes- i am really enjoying an original world with new make believe stuff. so far pullman uses a lot of names for items, places, and people that make me stop and think "did he make that one up?" it's refreshing after reading tolkien regurgitated- oh, i mean eragon.
i love the idea of the daemons.

ok, i finished the first book of the golden compass, and it was GREAT! i am so happy to have come upon a book where i feel attached to the characters, where i actually care about what happens to them....you know, that character bond! lyra and pantalaimon are so special to me, and the connection they have was wonderfully written, i loved it! my daughter picked up the second book for me at the library, and i'm a few chapters in now. i went back to look at the trailer for the movie, and december just can't come fast enough now.
i'm forcing my husband to pick it up and read by leaving it in the bathroom!! :lol

More English than a full sunday lunch

I have read two books recently that I really enjoyed and would like to recommend to folks.

The first is Map of Bones by James Rollins. It is sort of DaVinci Code-esque (actually more like Angels and Demons,) so there are government agents, secret societies conspiracies to take over the world, a mole in the Vatican, the seven ancient wonders of the world, and a bit of geography, history and clue solving. An action packed beach book if ever one was written.

The other book I read was Water for Elephants: A Novel by Sara Gruen. This is the story of Jacob Jankowski, who is recalling his early life as a circus veterinarian during the Great Depression, from his room in a nursing home at the end of his life. The book doesn't just tell Jacob's story, but is also a chronicle of life in a traveling circus during the first half of the 20th century.
It is really entertaining; I ended up reading it in two days because I just didn't want to put it down. It reminded me a lot of the TV series "Carnivale" without the scary preacher or the battle between good and evil, although there are certainly some really badduns in the book. My favorite character was a dwarf clown named Walter, who read Shakespeare and adored his Jack Russell terrier, and who, after a rocky start, became one of Jacob's best friends in the circus.

Thanks for the recommendations. I will have to read them come July 24th, post Potter. I am currently re-reading 1-6 for...well, why not?

I just finished reading The Confessions of Max Tivoli. It's about a man who is born with a young mind and an old body. As his mind grows up, his body gets younger. It's incredible. He falls in love with the same woman at three different points in his life. Really, really heart-breaking and beautifully written. Poetic even.

well, i finished the second pullman book "the subtle knife". it was a really good book, and a great follow up to the first one. i can't wait to read the 3rd and see how it all turns out....
with that said, here are some of my spoiler views on it

*****POSSIBLE SPOILERS*****

i loved Lyra's personality, and the way the story was mostly told from her point of view in the first book, and this book was not so much. she didn't seem like the tough girl with all of the street knowledge so much.....but i guess any kid would not be as confident in a whole new world??

i'm not sure i understand why everybody that seems to be a good character is so eager to back lord asriel in his war......to me he is almost as bad as mrs. coulter in the things he does.

i cried when lee scoresby and hester died.....well i teared anyway. i guess i kinda saw it coming chapters before it happened, but didn't like it.

the last few chapters had a number of frustrating outcomes- hester and lee, the witch that couldn't just put the arrow in mrs. coulter (because she's too nosy!), and the death of john parry! all that way for will's dad to just die in an instant???

i'm sure all of these are necessary parts that will have more effect in the next book, but still drove me a bit nuts!

i finished the final book in the "golden compass/his dark materials" series. It was defenitely different than any book i've ever read. the author pullman really took elements of science, religion, and human nature and pulled them all together in a very different way. this book made me CRY! it was a great series. i don't actually see how this is considered a "childrens" book though. there are some very adult storylines and themes here. maybe better for young adult.
now my step-daughter is trying to get me to read a vampire series she loves with the first book titled "twilight". i told her i will give it a try since i loved anne rice.....and have a little thing for romantic vampires

I just finished the Kite Runner and am now 1/3 finished with the Amber Spyglass.

But I think I'm going to take a break...I need some girly-girl books. Any suggestions?

I will try and write you a list of girly books that I have read that do not make you cry! Lol. I keep getting the chick flick books that make you bawl. I have to stop that!

I am currently reading the most recent Matthew Reilly book. Great Aussie author "Six Sacred Stones" is the book after "Seven Ancient Wonders". Can't wait to finish it.

I just finished the first book in a vampire series called "twilight". my vampire crush has SO returned thanks to edward cullen!! so i will be picking up the second book in the series when i can head to the book store (apparently it's on back order at the library, i would be number 25 on the waiting list to check it out!)
so i picked up the kite runner and started that the other day too!

ok, i finished the kite runner too now (I don't think i've read this many books this quickly since LOTR). I think from the time i actually picked it up and started, i was finished in a week.
The kite runner was a great book. i am gonna recommend it to my husband because aside from the many other issues it tackles, the storyline of father/son relationships was very powerful to me, and i think it would be a great read for him.
there were so many great twists in the story, i loved it. it was also a very easy read to me even with some foreign language and places involved.

Beedle the Bard Sells for Nearly 2 Million Pounds

On the 1st of November we told you that JK Rowling has written Tales of Beedle the Bard for a charity auction to be held by Sotheby's. The auction was held today in London, and the book was auctioned off for 1,950,000 ($3.98 million)! From CBBC Newsround:

The Harry Potter creator, who watched the auction live on the internet, told Newsround that she was "stunned and ecstatic" at the news.

JK hand wrote the jewel-encrusted volumes of short stories and gave six of them to her friends who had helped and supported her while she wrote the seven Potter books.

She told Newsround: "I'm stunned and ecstatic. This will mean so much to the children desperately in need of help. It means Christmas has come early for me."

ok, i just finished new moon, the second book in the twilight trio........
bella's character is so damn frustrating! how does she not see that she just @#%$ all over jacob by using him to recover from heartbreak? the fact that she is mostly so dismissive of life and whether she should live it makes me wanna smack her sometimes.
BUT- it was a great book, and I'm sure I'll devour the next one as well. dreamy fairy-tale love with a sinister touch, i love it.......
i can't wait to read the retelling of twilight from edward's perspective....maybe it will shed some light as to why he loves her so much.

OMG, I LOVED The Subtle Knife. I think that I like Will much better than Lyra.

Mrs. Coulter needs to get her bottom kicked. I hope Serefina Pekkala gets her!!
